漫画バガボンドで描かれる水の有り様を考える Musings on the essence of water as portrayed in manga Vagabond

梅雨の最中で、日常生活に置く「水」の存在について思いを寄せることが多くなることと改めて気づきました。我が家の宿る界隈において水は身近な存在で、その存在はあまりに密接かつ大きい。うちの裏には清流の小川が流れ、近所の寺院には小池があり、田んぼには水が流し入れその全面を覆い、そして近くには河川もあります。犬の散歩で「水」で成り立つこういう光景を目にすると、漫画のバガボンドから水に関する抜粋が思い浮かべます。当時拙僧が作った訳を見直し、そしてこの写真と一緒にもう一度投稿したいと思います。
The rainy season causes me to reflect often on the presence of water within our daily life. The familiar presence of water abounds in the environs where we make our humble abode. The clear brook that runs behind our house, the little pond in the neighborhood temple, the water flowing into and covering the entire surface of the rice paddies, and the river nearby. Taking in all these vistas formed by water when I walk our dog, an excerpt from the manga Vagabond comes to mind. I decided to go back and touch up my old translation of this excerpt and post it together with these photos.

急な勾配、狭い川幅、速く鋭い流れ
地形によって、外からの力によって、水のありようは完全に決められ
水自身はただそれに従っている
外からの力によって、ありようは完全に決められ
それでも水は水、どこまでも水
完全に自由
“A sharp descent, a narrow river, a sharp rushing current
The essence of water is formed by the lay of the land, the external forces acting upon it.
Water merely follows the path set before it.
Though shaped by these external forces, water is still water.
No matter where it goes, it's still water.
Completely free and unbound."

小川の岸にせよ、田んぼの堺にせよ、水に当てはまった形がその行方を決めるからって言っても、水という実質に変わりはないです。ただひたすらに流れるだけです。我ら人間はそれに見習って生きる価値はあると思います。
It doesn’t matter whether it’s the banks of the river or the boundaries of a field, the form applied to water does not change the fact that it is still water. It just keeps on flowing. I think it bodes well for us as human beings to follow that example as we go about our lives.
